3D printing#
Goal of this unit#
In this unit, you will learn to
- Identify the advantages and limitations of 3D printing.
- Apply design methods and production processes using 3D printing.
Before class#
- Install the slicing software : PrusaSlicer on your computer.
- Follow this 3D printing tutorial and prepare the gcode, using the slicing softwate, to print the 3D part you designed last week. Adapt your design so the printing time of your part does not exceed 20 to 30 minutes.
- prepare a STL file of a (small) part you want to print.
Class materials#
- 3D printing
- torture test
- Design rules
- Materials
- CNC Kitchen YouTube channel
Examples from FabZero#
- Characteriez and optimize the design parameters
- Make a flexible kit and machine in groups
- Some other machines : Virginie Louckx, Pauline Mackelbert
Assignment#
- In groups, test the design rules, comment on suitable materials, and printing best practices for reproducing the construction kit parts you designed last week on your 3D printer(s).
- In groups, test and optimize the dimensions and print settings of your flexible connectors or hinges so they are compatible with parts designed by other teams.
- Individually, 3D print and document the parts of your flexible construction kit.
- In groups, combine your parts to create a compliant mechanism with multiple flexible hinges, integrating additional 3D-printed and/or laser-cut components to perform a function or motion.
